This blog is an initiative of UWS arts students to protest the decision on the part of the University's College of Arts/School of Communication Arts to axe three of its key arts programs: Fine Arts, Electronic Arts and Performance. A Bachelor of Contemporary Arts has been planned to replace Fine Arts and Electronic Arts, and according to Head of School, Associate Professor Lynette Sheridan Burns: "student intake has been approved by the UWS Course Approvals and Articulations Committee and will be introduced in 2008." Performance, however, is not being reinstated in any form. Please send us leads, links, info and stories relating to this situation and we will post on your behalf. If you are an artist or performer who studies or studied arts at UWS, your support would be especially appreciated. Spread the word and let your network know what is going down at UWS. The Head of School walked out before the speeches where finished, couldnt handle the truth of the litany of achievements that where pointed out I guess.
The new BCA has been cancelled - they promised to market the new degree but apparently did almost nothing.
They have spent a fortune on promoting the music degree this year.Blanket adds on FBI, their own url, adds in On the street and drum media etc This is so unfair, its criminal.
The labor party in Maquarie is talking about approaching Charles Sturt University and trying to offer something for contemporary art in the mountains.I hope this happens.
UWS has lost the privlidge
to have an art school in the future. I was told after 2008 all the staff will have walked.Tragedy, shameful tragedy.
Basically guys -its whats known in the trade as being shafted, big time !
I heard 100 K on marketing the music degree this year, Fine Arts got nothing.So that means they wanted it to not get the numbers it needed. What a bunch of criminals.
The Head of School, Professor Lynette Sheridan Burns, is an absolute disgrace and coward for walking out of the speeches from invited industry guests.
I was standing near her, Hart Cohen, Juan Salazar and Rachel Bentley during the speeches and they smugly scoffed throughout until half-way through John Cheeseman's speech, Head of School walked out.
Western Sydney has what I am assuming is the largest regional gallery network in Australia and no art school to feed it.
What a fucking disgrace.
They sold the artschool out for a million bucks worth of investment in a pay for media degree and got no students. Repeat NO students.
Shouldnt the management resign ???
