What about the way marks are scaled by the college at UWS. This is contrary to the assesment criteria of a number of other universities who do not allow scaling to be applied to project work.
Most of the class - over half can only get a pass even if there work is awesomeand the decision is made totally arbitrarily by people who have never even taught us.
..hardly gives incentive for improvement or excellence in our studies does it...I think High School was fairer than this. Those stiffs doing this are real dummies...literal fascists...no wonder the world is so fucked up.
Someone should complain to the media about this. Its a scandal because at university I want the mark I deserve. the scaling is being applied to only small samples of students who are doing project based work
No one gets scaled up so its a system designed to put us down as a whole.
This is very unfair. They want to lock students out of progressing to Honours etc But what if this stops us studying at some other instituition eh and affects us for the rest of our lives.
This is punative and wicked...we should protest as students about a system that sets most up for a mediocre and life impacting result like this.
even if we have done excellent work its impossible to keep a credit point average.Credit is for good solid work and thats what most of us do. In our foeld we are innovating all the time because we are talented in the first place..so this system rips us all of badly.
Its another example of the management culture bullying the outcomes to their benefit. Bastards UWS !!!!!
There seems to be so many frustrating things about the university system (UWS specifcially) at the moment- prob always is but it feels like its getting worse. Been to all of the gradshows in Sydney and UWS blew me away the most the work that you guys are developing is gritty, it is challenging and it is interesting - the most important aspect to remember is that regardless of what the university strips away, KEEP making your art against all of the limitations that you are faced with (I don't mean to just sit back and accept what's going on though) no we all have to raise our voices and work together to make changes - but lets use our frustrations and limitations to keep making challenging and amazing work and not allow anyone to forget why Western Sydney artists rock!
Well its not really scaling thats going on its DOWNGRADING - the policy being that there has to be more passes than credits than distinctions and so on. Thats how its been explained.
It presumes a low score denominator as benchmark and aim but how does that fit when the work turns out to be excellent. You cannot win in this situation.
I have heard that at UTS if there are not enough credits questions are asked about the quality of the teaching - at UWS it seems they want people to have a mediocre score, isnt that Kafkaesque after all its a University where people should be able to achieve there best... where is the incentive for people to work harder when this system is so rigidly applied and most in a class will simply pass, its sadistic especially when we pay so much to even go there.
Art shall not be beaten by these idiots. Its much bigger than they are. Yep the gritty grad show sure kicks some ass.
Location: Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
This blog is an initiative of UWS arts students to protest the decision on the part of the University's College of Arts/School of Communication Arts to axe three of its key arts programs: Fine Arts, Electronic Arts and Performance. A Bachelor of Contemporary Arts has been planned to replace Fine Arts and Electronic Arts, and according to Head of School, Associate Professor Lynette Sheridan Burns: "student intake has been approved by the UWS Course Approvals and Articulations Committee and will be introduced in 2008." Performance, however, is not being reinstated in any form.
Please send us leads, links, info and stories relating to this situation and we will post on your behalf. If you are an artist or performer who studies or studied arts at UWS, your support would be especially appreciated. Spread the word and let your network know what is going down at UWS. Thankyou for your support.
